New Zealand Government Site: WiFi "Safety" in Schools

WiFi Safety in Schools

What is WiFi?

WiFi is a way to connect a computer or other device to a computer network using low power radio signals. It may be used to replace cable connections in the home, school or office, or to provide mobile internet access through so-called “wireless hot spots” in cities, at airports and in other locations.

Is exposure to WiFi signals harmful?

The Ministry of Education takes advice from the Ministry of Health on all health matters. The Ministry of Health recently affirmed its position that exposure to radioactive fields from WiFi equipment in schools does not pose a health risk to staff or students in the area where it is used.
Measurements in New Zealand and overseas show that exposures to radio frequency fields from WiFi equipment are extremely low, amounting to tiny fractions of the limit allowed for the public in the New Zealand radio frequency field exposure standard.
Exposures are low for three main reasons:
  • The low power of the WiFi transmitter.
  • The rapid decrease in signal strength with increasing distance from the transmitter.
  • The fact that no signal is transmitted when no data is being transferred (except for brief “beacon signals from the WiFi access point or router”).
The health and safety of children in our schools is critical and the Ministry will continue to monitor New Zealand standards, international standards and credible research on WiFi and radio frequency electromagnetic fields as it becomes available.

Do I need to take any precautions when using WiFi?

Although no special precautions are needed when using WiFi equipment (beyond any recommended by the equipment manufacturer), if people do have concerns and wish to reduce their exposure, there are simple steps you can take:
  • Place the wireless access, or router point, up on a high shelf, or away from where people might sit and work.
  • When working with a WiFi-enabled laptop, place it on a table rather than directly on the lap.
